What exactly is a “Traditional Bed and Breakfast”

With the influx of Airbnb and other short term rentals into the marketplace, it may no longer be clear what a true bed and breakfast is and what we offer. Yes, The Ash Street Inn is a traditional bed and breakfast and as we like to say #REALBNB. So what does that mean?

A traditional bed and breakfast (B&B) is a type of lodging establishment that typically offers accommodations in a more intimate and personalized setting than larger hotels.

The key features of a traditional B&B include:

Homely Atmosphere: B&Bs are known for their cozy and welcoming atmosphere. They often operate in houses, cottages, or historic buildings, providing a more intimate and homely environment for guests. The Ash Street Inn is housed in a 1885 Queen Victorian house that is connected to Manchester’s mill history.

Owner-Operated: Many traditional B&Bs are owner-operated, with the hosts living on the premises. This personal touch allows guests to interact with the owners and often receive personalized attention and local insights. As Margit and I live on the third floor, we are close enough to tend to any needs, yet we are not sitting in the parlor in the evening watching TV as you come and go. We leave the parlor for our guests to enjoy. (sans TV, be we do have TVs in the guest rooms)

The parlor also has a gas fireplace for our guests to enjoy.

Guest Rooms: B&Bs typically have a limited number of guest rooms, we have five and each room is uniquely decorated and furnished. The rooms showcase the property’s character and charm, often reflecting the local culture or history.

Home-Cooked Breakfast: One of the defining features of a B&B is the inclusion of a homemade breakfast as part of the stay. We offer many options including homemade yogurt and granola. Sweet or savory cooked to order is available everyday as well.

Savory or sweet? You get to decide

Local Character: Traditional B&Bs often strive to incorporate local character into their decor, amenities, and overall experience. This may include showcasing local art, providing information about nearby attractions, or using locally sourced products.

Personalized Service: Due to their smaller size, B&Bs can offer more personalized services to their guests. Hosts may provide recommendations for local attractions, restaurants, and activities, contributing to a more customized and memorable stay. There is a lot to do in the Manchester area and we would love to share that info.

Quiet and Relaxing Environment: B&Bs are often located in quieter, residential areas, contributing to a more peaceful and relaxing environment for guests seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of larger accommodations.

Attention to Detail: Owners of traditional B&Bs often pay close attention to details to enhance the overall guest experience. This can include thoughtful amenities, comfortable furnishings, and a focus on creating a memorable stay for visitors. Check out our reviews on Tripadvisor or Google.

Overall, staying at a traditional bed and breakfast offers a unique and charming experience, allowing guests to enjoy comfortable lodgings with a personal touch in a more intimate setting. We hope to see you soon!
